Sundial Plinths, Pedestals & Columns

Border Sundials offer a selection of plinths and pedestals specially designed for showing your sundial. These can be delivered anywhere on the UK mainland.

Delivery of your plinth or pedestal will usually be within two weeks. We can sometimes work miracles however, so if you are in need of one in a hurry it's always worth asking.

All plinths and pedestals supplied by Border Sundials are handmade in Somerset by a second generation family business. Based in the Cathedral City of Wells in the West Country the company's craftsmen draw on local stone masonry tradition to skilfully produce a stone cast identical to natural stone in almost every way but one... cost.

All the plinths and pedestals are first hand carved from natural stone by a master Mason, often taking inspiration from the nearby Wells Cathedral, before producing a mould.

A unique feature is that they contain natural Cotswold or Portland Stone and thus avoid the false colours created by using pigments or dyes. Crushed natural stone is used to produce a reconstructed stone with a fine honeycomb texture hand-finished to ensure an appearance as close as possible to that of natural cut stone.

The Classical Collection

Tudor plinth

Tudor Plinth

Height 30″(75cm)

The Tudor plinth is made up of 3 parts (top, bottom and the main column), the main column is hollow, so it is easy to move around. The Tudor stands 30″(75cm) high. The top is 13″(33cm) square.

Available with a Portland grey finish (as shown) or Cotswold (cream coloured).

This plinth is also available 17″high, which is ideal for the smaller garden or for placing a sundial on a raised bed. (The top and bottom are identical to the 30″but the column is shorter)

Shown here with a 50cm Armillary Sphere, these plinths are suitable for all my sundials.

Large Doric plinth

Large Doric

Height 42″(107cm)

The Large Doric is a beautiful plinth, made on a grand scale to suite the larger sundials and the grandest of gardens.

Made from three pieces it is transportable despite its size, but I would advise at least two people to move it safely.

The base is 17″(43cm) wide, the column is 10½″(26.5cm) wide and the top is 17″(43cm) across.

Pictured here in Cotswold Stone with an 80cm Armillary Sphere.

Large Doric £550

The Weathered Collection

The plinths in this section have been subjected to a unique weathering process to create pieces that already have the texture and appearance of old age.

Fingest plinth

Fingest Plinth

Height 36″(92cm) High

A solid column and standing 36″(92cm) high with a width at the top of 11 inches (28cm); the base is 13¾″(32.5cm). This slender (6″ 15.5cm at its narrowest) column is cast in reconstituted stone and then weathered and makes a fine addition to any garden.

Shown here with a 50cm armillary Sphere, the Fingest is perfect for all my sundials except the 12″horizontal sundial.

Fingest £280

Cupola Octogon plinth

Cupola Octogon Column

Top approx 8¾″

Height 34″(86.5cm)

This plinth comes in two pieces, the base and the column. The base is drilled out to reduce the weight. The total height is 34″, the column is 8″(22cm) wide, and the top is 8¾″ wide.

Shown here with a 60cm Armillary Sphere, the Cupola Octogon is suitable for all my Armillary Spheres and the 8″Horizontal.

Cupola Octogon £280

Doric plinth

Doric Column

Height 46″(117cm)

The Doric comes in two pieces, the base and column, and the top. Based on a column in Wells Cathedral, it has a well weathered finish which makes it look as though it has been in the garden for centuries.

The top is 12″(30cm) across and the column is 8″(20cm) wide. The Doric can be shortened if needed for a small extra fee.

Doric Column £285

Staddle plinth

Staddle Stone Plinth

Height 26″

The Staddle stone is made from one piece. It has a base 12″(30cm) across and tapers up to the top which is approx 7½″(19cm) wide.

Staddle stones can often be seen with a mushroom top and were originally used to stand grain stores on. The column kept the store off the wet of the ground and the mushroom top stopped rats climbing into the grain. In time the mushroom tops got lost or broken and so the habit of using them as pedestals began.

The staddle stone is only suitable for Armillary Spheres.

Price £180

There is a £60 carriage charge for all plinths (highland Scotland may be more)

All plinth prices quoted include VAT.
