The horizon band on your armillary sphere will give you plenty of space for your dedication or motto. All armillaries have space for at least 140 characters on the outside and about 20 characters in 4 places on the inside. With larger spheres we can fit even more characters on if you need them. We will always confirm your wording and layout before engraving the dial, either when you order your sphere or when we meet to discuss your commission on a booked site visit. We always discuss your commission in detail to be sure that the dial you order is perfect.
Our handmade horizontal sundials have different amounts of text depending on both the design you choose and the size.
The Nautical and Classic have space for a few short words or initials and look just as good without any words at all.
The Roman has more space for words; as a very rough guide:
line 1: 30 characters
line 2: 30 characters
line 3: 20 characters
curved line: 60 characters
(if you want more lines or words, just let us know and we’ll see if it’s possible)
The Kepler sundial incorporates the equation of time and can carry three lines of text (of 20 to 30 words each) but no curved line.
The Topographic can also carry three short lines and a longer curved line of text, up to 60 characters, but also has space for up to ten locations around the dial (but you certainly don’t have to include ten). Once you have chosen the locations you would like the dial to include, we calculate their direction and map them out on your dial. To make sure it’s exactly right, we send you a preview of your personalised topographic sundial to approve. Topographic dials are slightly larger to accommodate the directions and we make these dials up to 14 inches in diameter to create really stunning garden features.
